Next, we see the VVIP event, the networking event that brings together coaches and elite parents, and the drama ends. Hyena is a threat to the peaceful facade of the Kang household because she's someone who has lost everything and is determined to take back what she believes she has as legitimate a claim to as Yeseo: her place in the Kang family and as Junsang's daughter. Hyena weasels her way into the Kang household as Yebin's live-in tutor shortly after her mother's death, and finds herself butting heads with both Yeseo and Seojin, who make it a point to show her how unwelcome she is. She also doesn't shy away from manipulating or blackmailing people if it's for her own survival: she demands more money from her classmate's mother for tutoring a classmate, so she can afford to pay for her mother's hospital expenses she confronts Coach Kim and threatens to expose her illegal means of helping Yeseo top her classes, in exchange for sabotaging Yeseo into not making SNU's med school - so that Hyena herself can achieve Yeseo's dream and be accepted by her birth father Kang Junsang - who doesn't find out that she's his daughter until after her funeral, when Yebin reveals it in her anger and grief. Hyena was raised by her single mother, and spends her time after school caring for her terminally ill mother and tutoring the struggling rich kid in her class for extra money. Hyena is Yeseo's rival, later revealed to also be her illegitimate half-sister, and Woojoo's love interest. Hyena is possibly my favourite character in the series, and the fact that people are so divided in how they view her is probably proof of how great a character she is. It's this pyramid that drives the rift between himself and the rest of his family, driving one of the twins to break the pyramid in his frustration over Minhyuk's obsession with competition and being at the top, and his wife Seunghye to give him an ultimatum: get rid of the pyramid and stop enforcing his values on the rest of his family, or sign the divorce papers. The pyramid becomes almost inseparable from his own self-identity, because it's what he bases all his decisions on. His dream had been to be the president, but he wasn't born into important enough parents, and forces his sons to aspire towards that goal in his place. The older twin panics and fails to answer the question correctly, and Minhyuk makes him look at the pyramid on the table, telling him about the importance of reaching the top of the pyramid because this world is a hierarchy of the powerful and important at the top. There's one scene in which he sits ominously behind his sons in their dim study room, the metronome ticking away as he times how quickly they manage to answer the questions he sets them. Seojin is a complex and utterly dislikable character, but her rise to "redemption" came too easily - ultimately, she's the extreme example of a mother who wants the best for her daughter, and managed to make the right choice in the end. Yeseo's future as a third generation doctor in the Kang family is Seojin's promise to Madam Yoon, and her own key to maintaining her position in that elite castle she hides and cocoons her family in. Yes, she loves Yeseo dearly, but she also sees her daughter as her key to being properly accepted by her mother-in-law, Madam Yoon. She wants Yeseo to be the brilliant mind she failed to be. If anything, she's almost as guilty as Coach Kim: she doesn't just want the best for her daughter she's greedy for Yeseo's success. All this stress affects Yeseo, her grades drop, she suffers from anxiety and insomnia, and it is only from witnessing her daughter's spiral and imagining Yeseo destroy herself the way Myeongju did, that prompts Seojin to come clean. Yeseo finds herself torn between giving up her lifelong dream in order to save Woojoo's future and letting her friend remain unjustly imprisoned while she gets accepted into SNU's med school. Yeseo conveniently or inconveniently (depending on how you look at it) has a crush on Woojoo and has to see the sweet boy she has feelings for get dragged to jail she also knows that exposing Coach Kim - who had been stealing exam papers and making it seem like she was great at spotting questions, which contributed to Yeseo's perfect scores in all her tests would lead to her own expulsion. What prompts her to finally expose Coach Kim to the police, effectively wrapping up the drama and giving her her honestly unconvincing redemption is Yeseo's own emotional spiral.
